The SU-85, a medium-weight Soviet self-propelled artillery piece, was a formidable tank destroyer. It saw extensive and successful use from September 1943 until the end of World War II. Manufactured at the Uralmash heavy machinery plant from August 1943 to July 1944, a total of 2337 units were produced. Its 85mm D-5S gun allowed it to effectively engage medium tanks at distances over a kilometer, and penetrate the frontal armor of heavy tanks at closer ranges.
