The first time I remembered traveling the Trace, we were on our way to college, not as students, but as high school juniors. A group of friends and I were headed to Ole Miss for a visit day, and the most direct route seemed to be the Trace. We drove west, got on, and immediately found ourselves behind a driver respecting the speed limit of 45 mph. It felt like an eternity to get off in Tupelo. Only now do I appreciate how unique, slow, and thought-provoking those hours were, absorbing 10,000 years of history across three Southern states.
